Lady Painter

MFA in Painting, Tyler School of Art and Architecture

In my work I ask how cooking and food preparation can act as a space of self-definition and connection. Cooking occupies a special role in the domestic spaces I grew up in and I think about how it can be used to recapture the culture and language that my mother’s family lost when trying to assimilate into suburban California. Through cooking I learn to understand my heritage, family and American culture while being alone, without the inherent conflict of relationships and family. Through ingredients used in traditional Puerto Rican cooking, recipes that have been alive and changing in my family for generations, and my mom’s meatball recipe she got from Pinterest, I approach heritage, food culture and history from a fraught perspective. Through the processes of cooking and learning recipes passed down through a matriarchal lineage I explore how to recontextualize my thought process, adding nuance to my understanding of history and self.
